'Baseball Bug' and 'Sporty' Fashion Accessories Identify North Carolina Woman As RadioShack's Most Xtreme(SM) Baseball Fan

RadioShack, With Cal and Bill Ripken, Has Found the Most 'Driven' Baseball Fan

                                In the Country

FORT WORTH, Texas, July 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With a white Volkswagen Beetle adorned with red baseball stitches, Stevette Mathis of Dallas, N.C., has the baseball fan's dream car. Her VW "Bug" painted like a baseball was only part of the reason RadioShack, an official sponsor of Major League Baseball, along with Cal and Bill Ripken, named her the 2003 Xtreme(SM) Baseball Fan. Each and every day is influenced by this lifelong fan's love of baseball. She boasts an unrivaled collection of baseball-inspired clothing, accessories and stories.

Mathis beat out hundreds of other entrants in RadioShack Corporation's (NYSE: RSH) second annual search for the most dedicated and passionate baseball fan. As the grand prize winner, Mathis will receive a trip for four to Major League Baseball All-Star Week (July 11-15) in Chicago and will take in part of the festivities with Cal and Bill Ripken.

Mathis' love for baseball began at an early age. "I was born in October, and by the following April I was at the ballpark on my granddaddy's knee," Mathis fondly recalled. "I loved listening to baseball games on the radio, too, and imagined being there". Mathis submitted a video entry that featured her baseball clothing and accessory collection, spanning everything from t-shirts and sweatshirts, to necklaces, watches, earrings and pins.

Mathis, a retired school teacher, now spends her time following her passion in a second career escorting fans through ballparks across the country and taking in numerous ballgames along the way. When contacted by the Xtreme Fan committee Stevette was where else -- but at a ballgame, cheering on the Burlington Indians, a rookie league farm team!

"It was never a choice for me to become a baseball fan. It was always a part of who I am, which is why I knew I had to enter RadioShack's Xtreme Baseball Fan Contest," stated Mathis. "Some people may think I need to get a life, but for me, baseball is my life and I couldn't be happier about it."

Launched in March 2003 by RadioShack, future Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and his brother, 12-year major league veteran Bill Ripken, the 2003 Xtreme Baseball Fan contest sought out the most passionate and dedicated baseball fans in the country. Entrants were invited to submit a short essay (optional video or photographs) that documented why they, or someone they knew, were deserving of the title "Xtreme Baseball Fan."

"Fans like Stevette are really what make the game so special," commented the legendary Cal Ripken Jr. "The game of baseball is great whether it's played in an empty field or in front of a packed house, but it is the great baseball fans like the ones who entered the Xtreme Fan contest who give it atmosphere and electricity. Bill and I look forward to watching the All-Star Game with such an Xtreme baseball fan."

"This year we received a multitude of excellent entries, exemplifying the depth of America's love affair with baseball," stated Jim McDonald, senior vice president of advertising and marketing for RadioShack. "It was a tough decision; however, Stevette possessed the passion, dedication and most definitely the 'drive' to win the title of the most Xtreme Baseball Fan."

Taking the honors for the runner-up position were Rob and Priscilla Steinmetz of Orland Hills, Ill. The couple was married five years ago in a baseball-themed event complete with guests rising for the National Anthem, a first pitch thrown out by the Father of the Bride, and ball park dogs as part of the dinner entree. They were awarded a prize package that includes a trip to the Cal Ripken Jr. World Series Championship Game taking place in Aberdeen, Md., August 24.
